Woodforest mobility gets a boost with FM 2854 bridge construction

Construction begins this month on the third section of a plan to improve Montgomery County mobility — a bridge over railroad tracks at FM 2854 that will connect Fish Creek Thoroughfare to the existing McCaleb Road, providing access to State Highway 105.

Fish Creek Thoroughfare, an important north-south alternative to Interstate 45 that opened last spring, is the major roadway through Woodforest. Precinct 2 Commissioner Craig Doyal, who has spearheaded regional mobility projects, called Fish Creek Thoroughfare a tremendous asset to Montgomery County and the entire region.

“It is also a terrific example of a private-public partnership illustrating the possibilities that can be achieved through collaboration to improve mobility within Montgomery County,” he said.

A groundbreaking is scheduled for 10 a.m. Jan. 25 at the Woodforest Welcome Lodge. For more information, contact Kristi Steward at kristis@johnsondev.com.

The Johnson Development Corp., the developer of Woodforest, contributed significantly to the design of the $4.3 million Lake Creek Bridge, which is part of Fish Creek Thoroughfare. The developer also funded an additional two lanes on a one-mile segment of the now four-lane roadway running through the heart of Woodforest, between the intersections of Elk Trace Parkway and Woodforest Parkway. In all, the extension of Fish Creek Thoroughfare cost $12 million and provides access from FM 2978 in Tomball to Conroe.

With the addition of the overpass, estimated to cost $6.3 million and expected to open in about a year, access will be provided to State Highway 105 at Lake Conroe.

Earlier last year, FM 1488 was expanded to four lanes with a continuous turning lane from Texas 242 to FM 2978. The project’s next two phases, from Texas 242 to Interstate 45 and from FM 2978 to Mostyn Road, are on track to be completed this year.
